Caring for Your Fencing & Decking
Caring for Your Fencing & Decking
Simple advice to keep your fencing, gates, decking and driveways looking their best, year after year.
A little routine care keeps your fencing, gates and decking looking good and lasting longer. Here are our simple tips.
Timber fencing and gates
- Most pressure-treated timber benefits from a fresh coat of fence treatment or stain every couple of years to keep its colour and protect against the weather.
- Keep climbing plants and heavy growth in check so they do not trap moisture against the timber.
- Check posts, hinges and latches each year and tighten or adjust as needed.
Concrete fencing
- Concrete posts, gravel boards and panels need very little upkeep — an occasional clean is usually all that is required.
- Check that panels are sitting securely in the posts, especially after high winds.
Decking
- Sweep regularly and clean timber decking once or twice a year to prevent a build-up of dirt and algae, which can make it slippery.
- Re-oil or re-treat timber decking as needed; composite decking simply needs an occasional wash.
Driveways and patios
- Brush off debris and remove weeds from joints to keep block paving looking its best; re-sanding the joints occasionally helps.
- An occasional wash keeps resin, paving and patios clean — avoid harsh power-washing on jointing sand.
